1.0 INSPIRATION

This motion graphic is inspired by my desire for freedom and creative diffusion. At the beginning, I envisioned a dandelion spreading around, the seeds fluttering in the wind not only symbolize my desire for freedom, but also the process of finding inspiration and spreading creativity as a designer. Each scattered seed represents a new concept of design and symbolizes my ability and determination to expand the boundaries of my creativity

Through this animation, I want to convey the message from the birth of inspiration to the spread of creativity, just like how I hope that my design journey can be such a dandelion -gentle but firm, free but with a direction, always finding its own rhythm in the wind.

2.0 MOTION GRAPHIC AIM

What- An animated transformation of my logo inspired by a dandelion’s life cycle — from drifting seed to blooming, scattering, and logo reveal.

Why- It embodies my identity as a designer who values freedom, creativity, and the endless spread of ideas.

How- Using trim path, opacity fades, and path animation to create a smooth, symbolic visual journey from nature to design.

4.0 ANIMATION DESIGN PROCESS

I use Adobe After Effects to do my logo motion graphic

1. First, I use google find the material of dandelions floating in the sky and put it in my workspace.I drag the timeline of material from 0.00 seconds to 2.19 seconds. I put the keyframe of opacaity at 2.10 seconds with opacity 100% and put another keyframe with opacity 0% at 2.13 seconds to make a transition to the next screen.

2. I import my logo file from Adobe Illustrator and arrage it in layers. I choose the layering symnolismed by dandelion and pre-composed it. So that, I would not be confused and could concentrate on making my animation for this part. I  create all layers from shape to vector layer and hide the layers from adobe illustrator .I adjusted my first dandelion petals from small to large while moving the position. I put the keyframe of scale with 0% at 0.04 seconds and another keyframe with scale 100% at 0.23 seconds. Then, I put the keyframe of rotation with -40 degree at 0.08 seconds and another keyframe with rotation 0 degree at 0.28 seconds.I put the keyframe of opacaity at 0.00 seconds with opacity 0% and put another keyframe with opacity 100% at 1.04 seconds to let the dandelion petals appear on the screen. Then, I select all the keyframe and choose keyframe assistant and chose 'easy ease' to let the animation looks smooth.

3. I added all the dandelion petals in order in opacity from 0% to 100% and gradually delayed them to show the dandelion slowly blooming. From 0.29second until 2.13 seconds, there will have 29 layers of dandelions appear gradually based on the keyframe I had put.

4. I choose the layering symnolismed by dandelion seeds and pre-composed it.I  create all layers from shape to vector layer and hide the layers from adobe illustrator . I add the trim path on every shape layer of seeds. So that, it will automatically add the keyframe from 9.11 seconds until 13.06 seconds on
every shape layer of seeds to make it flew anywhere based on the path I had draw. Bedsides, I also add the keyframe with opacity 0% at 9.1 seconds and another keyframe with opacity 100% at 13.02 seconds. The total of the shape layers for seeds have 14 and I add the same keyframe in every layers. After that, I put the pre-compose of seeds into the main Logo animation timeline at 5.07seconds until 9.18 seconds.

5. At the same time, I create 'stem' layer from shape to vector layer and hide the layer of adobe illustrator. I add trim path in the content. I put the first keyframe on start with 100%  and end with 34% at 4.23 seconds. Another keyframe on start with 0%  and end with 100% at 5.23 seconds. Then, I create a mask and adjust the mask feather and mask opacity. For mask feather, first keyframe at 4.13 seconds with feather 400 pexiels, second keyframe at 5.02 seconds with feather 100 pixels and last one at 5.16 seconds with 0.00 pixels. For mask opacity, first keyframe with opacity 0% at 4.24 seconds and second keyframe with opacity 100% at 5.17 seconds.

6. For 'JY' and 'ESIGN', I also craete from shape to vector layer. Then, I add the trim path on both layers. For trim path, I add keyframe on start with 100% at 9.13 seconds and another keyframe on start with 0 % at 10.15 seconds. I also add the keyframe for opacity. First keyframe with opacity 100%  at 9.06 seconds and next keyframe with opacity 100% at 11.02 for the later animation needs. At 11.08 seconds, I add the keyframe with opacity 0 % and  another keyframe with opacity 100% at 11.17 seconds to make it looks like flash.

7. In order to fill the words of  'JY' and 'ESIGN' outline, I adjust the opacity keyframe on both Adobe Illustrator layers. First keyframe on 10.11 second with opacity 0%, and add on another keyframe with opacity 100% at 10.18seconds. In order to see that it is gradual effect, I added a keyframe between these two keyframes which is opacity with 26% at 10.15 seconds. In the final stage, I add the keyframe with opacity 0 % at 11.08 seconds and  another keyframe with opacity 100% at 11.17 seconds to make it looks like flash which is same with other layers.

5.0 PROBLEM SOLVING

I originally planned to use a third-party plug-in which is Trapcode Particular to achieve the effect of particles gathering to form the text 'JY' and 'ESIGN', but the plug-in installation failed. To solve this problem, I used the Trim Path and Opacity Transition to show the appearance of the text in a line-drawing style.I added a trim path to the outline layer of 'JY'  and 'esign', added a keyframe to the start layer, and adjusted the opacity transition to make it appear as if the font was filled after the font was stroked. Although this method is different, it still maintained the sense of emergence achieved with a much smoother, hand-drawn, presentation.

6.0 ANIMATION PRINCIPLES

Based on 12 Principles of Animation for Motion Graphic, I implemented several key principles :

1.Ease In/ Ease Out

In all the main layers such as petal rotation, seed scattering, stem growth, and logo appearance, I used ease in and ease out to avoid abrupt changes in movement and make the frame flow naturally.

2.Follow Through

The process of seeds scattering is not just a displacement animation, but also adds transparency gradient, irregular path and slight rotation. These details enhance the realism of seeds scattering in all directions, allowing each seed to have independent dynamic continuity.

3.Staging

Presented visual elements in clear stages (real footage → flower → scatter → logo) to guide viewer focus.

4.Arc

The movement path of dandelion seeds is a curved drifting track, which makes the seeds drift more like the wind effect in the real world, enhancing the natural feeling.

7.0 REFLECTION

Through this motion graphic project, I learned how to combine conceptual storytelling with technical execution.

Skill I learned :

1.Trim Path
I understand the application of Trim Path to animate outlines and shapes seamlessly, particularly for clean logo or line animations.

2.Use of Opacity & Masking Techniques
Getting used to the potential of opacity keyframes and masks to create seamless visual transitions, whether it's fade ins, fade outs, and building depth with layers.

3. Use of pen tool
I learned how to use the pen tool to create a path so that the object I want moves along the path.

4. Problem Solving Within Design Tools
I learned to change and adapt to my creative vision even when I faced the problem which is third-party plugin that did not work; taking a lack of something and creating something new out of that limitation.

These skills are important because it is the foundation to become a good motion designers:

  • Trim path and opacity transition control can clearly and elegantly convey animation information.
  • Timing control and path animation give static graphics life and flow.
  • Adaptability and problem-solving skills can ensure that creative goals are achieved under technical limitations.

These skills enable me to better combine creativity and animation to help clients and audiences resonate in the visual, convey emotions and design concepts in the future.
